Minas Gerais

Minas Gerais, a state in Brazil, adopted the red, white and black flag from 1892 to 1946. The red stands for blood shed by patriots during the war of independence against Portugal; the white represents peace and purity of ideals; and the black stands for strength, constancy and valor.

The state also used a modified version of its flag that was introduced on May 22nd 1894 as its official standard. This flag had an additional green triangle at the hoist containing an image depicting Our Lady of Conception (“Nossa Senhora da Conceição”).
